[ARCHIVED] Mayor urges citizens to honor graduating seniors

Mayor Alonzo Jones is encouraging all citizens to honor the graduating seniors in the city as they take part in ceremonies starting on Friday.

Galileo Magnet High School will hold an all-day, drive-thru graduation ceremony on Friday. George Washington High School is planning a personalized, drive-thru style graduation that begins on Monday and continues until Wednesday.

The mayor has issued a proclamation proclaiming May 29-June 6 as “High School Senior Celebration Week.”

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2020 was unable to participate in the numerous traditions often occurring throughout the spring of their graduating year, but will be known forever as one of the most unique graduating classes in our history,” Jones stated in the proclamation.

“We encourage all our residents to join us in recognizing the achievements of this year’s graduating class. We further encourage all our residents to celebrate and support our graduating seniors as they embark on the next phase of their life, whether it be further education, entering the workforce, or serving our country.”

Jones said this year’s graduating class has stood strong and adapted to the circumstances. While some graduates may feel that coronavirus has cheated them out of the traditional reward of four years of hard work, the mayor urges graduates not to allow it to rob them of hopes they have had.

“This is a time for a new beginning for you, and there is a fresh slate for you to write on," Jones said.
