[ARCHIVED] Company ends bike-share services in city

Zagster announced this week that the company would no longer be providing bike-share services, effectively ending Danville’s bike share program, Danville Rides.

“This was a difficult decision but a necessary one,” the company wrote in an email to Danville Parks and Recreation, citing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the closure. The communication included the company’s plan to remove the bikes and the bike lockers over the next few months.

Zagster users were also notified via email that the company would no longer offer the program.

The City of Danville contracted Zagster in August 2017 to provide a bike share program along the Riverwalk Trail and through downtown. Five bike stations housing 25 bikes have been a staple of the River District for the past three years.

The company paused the program in late March due to the pandemic.

The announcement of the closure has affected communities across the state, including Roanoke and Suffolk.
