City Council will resume meeting in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Building on Tuesday. The meeting is open to the public, but attendees may have their temperature screened and must maintain social distancing due to ongoing public health concerns related to the COVID-19 virus.

Also, visitors will be asked to wear a mask while in the building unless they have a medical condition that exempts them from the mask requirement.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Access to the Municipal Building is limited to the first-floor entrance (Police Department) on Court Street.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the meeting. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

City Council is scheduled to hold public hearings on the following matters:

  • Sale of the Pinnacles Hydroelectric complex to Northbrook Energy for $8.2 million, and purchase of the energy, capacity and renewable energy credits from the facility. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A budget amendment to accept nearly $2.3 million in federal CARES Act money for eligible operating expenses for the mass transit system.
  • A budget amendment to accept $110,452 in federal funding to assist in preventing, preparing for, and responding to the coronavirus.

Citizens who do not wish to attend the meeting due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus may submit a general public comment or a comment for a specific public hearing may do so by visiting this website: http://danvilleva.gov/council.

Under the City Council’s rules of procedure, comments are limited to 750 words, which is the equivalent of five minutes speaking, for communications from visitors, and 400 words, which is the equivalent of three minutes speaking, for public hearings.

Citizens also may submit comments by calling a public line set up for the meeting. The phone number for the line is (434) 857-3348.

Citizens can submit comments up until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 15.

In addition to the items scheduled for a public hearing, City Council is expected to vote on the following matters:

  • Final adoption of the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. A public hearing was held earlier this month.
  • Changes to the personnel system.
  • An agreement with the City of Eden for water and wastewater services for the Southern Virginia Mega Site at Berry Hill,
  • Designation of seats under the canopy of the Carrington Pavilion as a no-smoking area.
  • Appointments to various boards and commissions, including the Utility Commission, Airport Commission, and Social Services Advisory Board.
