[ARCHIVED] Fireworks set for July Fourth celebration

Fireworks show

Danville Parks and Recreation will host the annual July Fourth fireworks display on Saturday, July 4, as it has in years past; however, citizens are urged to continue to follow all state and federal guidelines for social distancing while enjoying the show.

The fireworks will begin around dusk, weather permitting, and will be detonated on the southbound lane of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge. The southbound lane and all access lanes of the bridge will close at 2 p.m., and the northbound lane will close at 8 p.m.

Additionally, the pedestrian bridge at the Crossing at the Dan will close at 9 p.m., and parts of the Riverwalk Trail will be closed throughout the day.

Residents are urged to obey all traffic signs and detours and also to leave pets inside their homes. Parks and Recreation offices will be closed on July 3 and July 4.

Parks and Recreation is again selling parking spots on the site of Riverfront Park this year. Places are $30/vehicle. Due to spacing restrictions, only a limited number of spots will be sold. Those interested can call 799-5195 or visit Danville Public Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Thursday. Tickets will not be sold after 5 p.m. on July 2. There is only one paid parking lot for fireworks. The remaining public parking downtown will be free.

Also, on Saturday, Parks and Recreation will host the annual Danville Patriot Challenge trail run and ice cream social at Anglers Park. The cost is $30 a runner or four runners for $100 with advanced registration—the price increases to $40 on the day of the race (cash only). To register, visit www.PlayDanvilleVA.com or call 434-793-4636.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the race will feature a staggered start, chip timing, limited viewing area, and additional guidelines on site.
