[ARCHIVED] Danville to resume utility disconnections Sept. 1

The City of Danville will resume utility disconnections for delinquent residential and commercial accounts starting Sept. 1. Also, on Sept. 1, the City will resume charging a $50 delinquent account fee for all utility customer classes.

Notices have been mailed to customers with past due balances of more than 35 days. To avoid service interruption and related fees, customers must pay any portion of their balance that is more than 35 days past due before Sept. 1.

Federal funding has been made available to state and local governments to help communities with COVID-19 issues. A portion of this funding is available for utilities.

City residents with COVID-19-related income loss can contact the Danville Department of Social Services to apply for assistance with past due utility accounts. Residents should apply by Aug. 14. Danville Utilities customers who reside in Pittsylvania, Halifax and Henry counties should contact their locality’s Department of Social Services to see if assistance is available there.

Another source of aid to utility customers is available through Pittsylvania County Community Action.

Customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible while funding is available. Also, residential customers have the option of enrolling in an equal payment plan.

Utility disconnections and the $50 delinquent account fee were suspended in March to alleviate financial stress on families who may have lost income during the state’s stay-at-home order. Phase Three of the state’s reopening plan began on Wednesday.
