In support of our ongoing partnership with Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services to combat opioid abuse, Director of Prevention Services Amanda Oakes presented a check to Captain Steve Richardson with the Danville Police Department to purchase duty belt Naloxone carry cases.
These cases have allowed officers to have immediate access to administer this life-saving drug when responding to opioid overdoses. As part of the ongoing City of Danville Opioid Response Collaborative, the Danville Police Department obtained Naloxone for every officer, at no cost, from the Virginia Department of Health. After the completion of training, this medication was deployed to all Danville Police officers in May of 2020. Since deployment, our officers have used Naloxone in the field five times to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses.
This is another step in the city’s effort to save lives on the street while focusing on diversion efforts at individuals suffering from opioid addiction.
