[ARCHIVED] Library will celebrate card signup month

Not only is the month of September time for students to return to school, but it’s also National Library Card Sign Up Month, and Danville Public Library is celebrating both.

Throughout September, individuals interested in signing up for a library card can do so without having to leave their car. Every Wednesday starting Sept. 2, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., library staff will meet interested patrons in front of the Ruby B. Archie Library Building on Patton Street to sign up for a card.

Cards are free to all residents living within 50 miles of Danville Public Library (both Virginia and North Carolina addresses). Applicants must have a valid state- or federally issued ID with a current physical address. Proof of address, such as a phone or utility bill, is only required in the event the ID does not show the correct address.

Library cardholders gain free access to the library’s in-house collection that includes books, audiobooks, and DVDs as well as a robust online collection that includes multiple streaming services, e-books, movies, audiobooks, learning databases, and more.

For patrons who already possess a card, but may have a few fines on their account, Danville Public Library is once again hosting the Supplies for Fines program. Between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, the library will waive $2 for every school supply item donated up to $50. Supplies will be donated to Danville Public Schools.

Library staff will only accept unopened and undamaged items. Travel size, single items, and items marked as promotional cannot be accepted.

Supplies that will be accepted include:

  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Glue Sticks
  • Ziploc Bags (any size)
  • Scissors (child size)
  • Color Pencils
  • Construction Paper
  • Dry Erase Markers
  • Single Subject Notebooks
  • Plastic folders

For more information on any of these or other library programs or services, contact 434-799-5195 or visit ReadDanvilleVA.org.

The Danville Public Library Ruby B. Archie Location is open Monday – Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library follows all CDC guidelines in regards to masks and social distancing.
