[ARCHIVED] City Council will meet in business, work sessions

The City Council will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in a business session at 7 p.m. followed by a work session. Both sessions will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The meeting is open to the public, but attendees may have their temperature screened and must maintain social distancing due to ongoing public health concerns related to the COVID-19 virus.

Also, visitors will be asked to wear a mask while in the building unless they have a medical condition that exempts them from the mask requirement.

Access to the Municipal Building is limited to the first-floor entrance on Court Street.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on several matters:

  • A budget amendment to account for the receipt of a $179,560 grant that will be used to upgrade the 9-1-1 phone system at the Emergency Services Center. The upgrade will take the City from an analog system to an IP digital system that is capable of supporting the growing demands of a mobile society. The project includes $22,078 in local funding.
  • A resolution to designate the Danville Office of Economic Development as the designated marketing organization for Danville and Pittsylvania County. This designation would allow the City to participate in certain marketing efforts and be better positioned for state tourism grants. Since 2017, the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce has coordinated tourism efforts for the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County. The Chamber of Commerce has made a request to the Virginia Tourism Corporation to relinquish its status.
  • A special use permit to allow for a restaurant at 1050 Main St. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A special use permit to allow accessory buildings without a primary building on a parcel on Kingoff Drive. A public hearing will precede the vote.

Also, five items are on the agenda for a first reading. The items include budget amendments for various grants, plus acceptance of the $15 million upfront payment from Caesars Virginia.

A first reading is an introductory step required by City Code before some issues can be voted upon by City Council. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. Council cannot vote on these items Tuesday night. The earliest vote that can take place will be the next City Council meeting.

Details on the agenda are available online.
