[ARCHIVED] Main Street parking changes begin May 3

Starting May 3, the City of Danville will implement parking changes along Main Street in the River District to provide downtown shoppers with quick and easy access to local businesses.

The changes include a shift to one-hour parking from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Currently, two-hour parking is allowed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The shift will encourage residents and employees to park in lots and on streets that have no time limit. Multiple unlimited and two-hour parking options are available downtown. They can be located using the River District app Distrx or by downloading an online parking map.

Signs will go up and a two-week grace period will start on May 3. During the grace period, Danville Police will hand out warning tickets and information on all parking options.

On May 17, Police officially will begin enforcing the one-hour parking limit.

Besides the shift to one-hour parking, Public Works crews are painting lines to define clearly parking spaces, and they are adding a handicapped spot at the top of the street.

The changes are in response to downtown merchants’ concerns about the challenges their customers have with parking along Main Street.
