[ARCHIVED] City Council will meet in business, work sessions

The City Council will meet on Tuesday, July 6, in a business session at 7 p.m. followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.

The business session will be held in the City Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the City Council Conference Room. In work sessions, the City Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and RiverStreet Networks channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

In the business session, the City Council is scheduled to vote on several matters:

  • Appropriation of $172,272 in federal funds to be used for design services to rehabilitate the south ramp at the Danville Regional Airport
  • A special use permit for a duplex at 346 Virginia Ave. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A resolution denying a special use permit at 259 Guilford St. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A rezoning request at 1083 Franklin Turnpike. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A rezoning request at 816 West Main St. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A special use permit for a day care center at 145 Franklin Turnpike. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A rezoning request at 1100 West Main St. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • An amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow contractor’s establishments in highway retail commercial districts. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • An amendment to the zoning ordinance to add a definition for cannabis dispensing facilities and to allow them as a permitted use in a neighborhood retail commercial district. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A resolution authorizing an application to the Virginia Department of Rail and Transportation for federal and state mass transit assistance. A public hearing will precede the vote.

Also during the business session, the City Council will hold a first reading on appropriation of $100,000 in state funds and $20,000 in local funds for airport maintenance, including pavement repairs for automobile parking lots, the primary runway and taxiway. A first reading is an introductory step required by City Code. City Council will vote on these matters later in July.

During tonight’s work session, the City Council will review the proposed purchase of property for the expansion of the West Fork electric substation.

In addition, the City Council will hold a closed meeting as allowed by state law for discussion of a prospective business or industry related to economic development, discussion of the acquisition of real property or disposition of publicly held real property, and consultation with legal counsel.

Details on the agendas for both the business and work sessions are available online
