Annual Holiday Light Show kicks off

The eighth annual Community Holiday Light Show kicks off tonight, with shows daily from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ballou Park through Dec. 23. The drive-through event features displays built by local individuals, families, organizations and businesses.

Enter the park at its Park Avenue entrance. Volunteer groups will be there to direct traffic through the park. The cost is $10 per car and $20 for buses and 15-passenger vans. This is a cash-only event.

After being absent from the show last year, the Children’s Village is returning to the bottom level of Ballou Recreation Center. Photos with Santa, free books, and refreshments are included in the price of admission.

Also, this year’s ornament will be available for purchase inside Children’s Village for $5 while supplies last. The 2021 ornament is the first ever community designed ornament—created by local artist, Harry Aron.

“We’re so excited to have the Community Holiday Light Show running fully this year,” said Taylor Roberts, special events coordinator for Parks and Recreation. “The light show is made possible every year by the kind acts of volunteers who work the gate each nigh To repay each organization, a portion of the proceeds is donated to each volunteer group.”

Last year, 3,580 cars and eight buses carrying 12,075 people came through the park for the show, which drew visitors from Kentucky, California, Montana, Illinois, Maryland, Georgia, Texas, and Maine. The Southeast Tourism Society has designated the light show as a Top 20 event in the region.

A portion of the proceeds is donated to local organizations, volunteer groups, and non-profits. Last year, the amount of money donated for “Best Display” to non-profits totaled $3,900; and gate worker groups earned over $15,500.
