[ARCHIVED] Council OKs changes for cannabis dispensaries

The City Council on Tuesday night voted to amend the City Code regarding medical cannabis dispensing facilities. One change adds a cannabis dispensing facility to permitted uses in an HR-C Highway Retail Commercial zoning district.

The amendment removes cannabis dispensing facilities as a permitted use in an N-C Neighborhood Commercial zoning district. Also, the definition of cannabis dispensing facilities now includes all cannabis products.

The Planning Commission last month voted to recommend the changes.

In other matters, the City Council voted to:

  • Rezone 113 Franklin Turnpike and two adjacent parcels to allow a mini-storage warehouse on the property.
  • Release the existing lien and associated costs affecting a parcel on Gray Street to facilitate its sale to a new owner.
  • Amend the City Code to address differential yards on corner lots. The Planning Commission requested the change so that corner lots have a front yard and a street-side yard instead of two front yards.

The City Council also held first readings on budget amendments to accept various grants, including $834,929 in state aviation funding to complete airport terminal building renovations. A first reading is an introductory step required by City Code. City Council will these matters at its next meeting.

In other matters, the City Council heard presentations from the Danville Otterbots baseball team and the Southside Area Tennis Association.
