Mayor speaks at 9/11 commemoration

Mayor delivers keynote address.

Mayor Alonzo Jones today delivered the keynote address for the 22nd anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He urged citizens to "honor the memory of the lives lost by shaping a better future for ourselves and generations to come."

“As we gather here today, we do so not only to remember the pain and loss but also to reaffirm our commitment to action, to healing, and to building a better future,” Jones said. “It is a call to action rooted in the lessons we've learned from the past, a call that challenges us to honor the memory of the lives lost by shaping a better future for ourselves and generations to come. … Let us remember how we felt 22 years ago, when what united us was more important. Let us love each other, care for each other, and help each other.”

The Danville Life Saving Crew today hosted the event, which was a collaborative effort by Danville’s first responders including the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Danville Fire Department, Danville Police Department, and the Danville Sheriff's Office. Danville Public Schools also participated, with School Superintendent Dr. Angela Hairston speaking and performances by the George Washington High School band and choir.
The program began with a patriotic medley played by U. S. Coast Guard Piper Tim Carpenter; followed by a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., which was the time the first plane crashed into one of the twin towers; a toll of the bells; posting of colors by a joint honor guard of the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and Police Department; and performances by the GWHS Marching Band and Choir. In addition to Mayor Jones, Delegate Danny Marshall also addressed those gathered. The ceremony also featured on display a 9/11 painting by Danville resident and professional artist Sherman Watkins.
