HOW DO I COMMEND A POLICE OFFICER?

If you wish to commend an officer, please use one of the options below. Anonymous commendations are also accepted.

How do I make a complaint against a Police Officer?

The City of Danville Police Department takes seriously all complaints regarding the service provided by the Department and the conduct of its members. If you wish to make a complaint about the actions of a Danville police officer or any other aspect of police operations, please use one of the options below.

Make a complaint online. You can submit an allegation of misconduct through a form on our website. | Complaint Form
Complete a form and submit in person or by mail. Print and complete the Citizen Complaint and Inquiry Form (PDF) submit the form to the Police Department in person (1 Community Way, temporarily 2291 Memorial Drive, Danville, VA 24541) or by mail at the following address: Chief of Police, Danville Police Department, P.O. Box 3300, Danville, VA 24543. This form asks you to identify yourself and to give specific details about your complaint. Anonymous complaints are also investigated.

Your complaint will then be investigated. You may be contacted and asked for additional questions about your complaint. A supervisory officer will assist you in filling out a complaint form if you wish. When your complaint has been investigated, the Chief of Police will review the investigation and write you a letter explaining what has been determined concerning your complaint.

6. Where do I go to get fingerprinted for a job?

Call 434-799-6522 to schedule an appointment with the Danville Police Department Records Office, 1 Community Way, temporarily 2291 Memorial Drive, Danville, VA 24541. Fingerprints are taken between the hours of 1:30 pm and 3:45 pm Monday through Friday. The cost of fingerprinting is $10.00 for the first card and $5.00 for each successive card. Payment is accepted in cash only. If you are applying for a job with the City of Danville, there is NO cost involved. *COVID-19 Appointment Screening - please bring a facemask and understand we will be wearing ours also.

7. How do I obtain a concealed weapon permit?: A copy of the application can be downloaded from the Virginia State Police website by clicking here or you can pick up a copy at the Danville Circuit Court Clerk's Office. The form and the link below will outline the necessary steps to obtain a permit.

8. What permits are available from the Police Department?

The Police Departments a variety of permits, including but not limited to, second-hand fixtures permits, parade permits, taxi permits, and street closure permits.

9. How do I obtain a Secondhand Building Fixtures Permit?: Virginia code § 59.1-117 now requires a permit to be obtained and held by any person(s) selling or acquiring any secondhand building fixtures. Further code definition classifies the following as Secondhand Building Materials: secondhand heating or plumbing fixtures or supplies, electric fixtures or any wiring, gas fixtures or appliances, water faucets, pipes, locks, bathtubs, gutters, downspouts, or other secondhand fixtures of whatever kind or description pertaining to a building or structure.

10. How do I obtain an Annual Junk Dealer Permit for Secondhand Building Fixtures?: The chief of police of a city or the sheriff of a county may issue, to persons regularly engaged in the business of collecting secondhand building materials for resale, a semiannual or annual permit covering all sales and acquisitions made by such persons. The chief of police or sheriff may refuse to issue a permit, and may revoke any permit issued, to any person convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude within the three years prior to the request for the permit. The applicant shall file with the chief of police or sheriff, or his designee, an application form that shall include the applicant's full name, address, age, sex, and fingerprints; the name, address, and telephone number of the applicant's employer, if any; and the location of the applicant's place of business. A permit shall be valid for one year from the date of issuance and may be renewed in the same manner as such permit was initially obtained. A fee of not more than $50 may be charged annually for the issuance of the permit.

11. How do I obtain a shoulder patch from the department?: The Danville Police Department does not provide shoulder patches for the general public.

12. How do I obtain a copy of my criminal record?: You may request a copy of your criminal history from the Virginia State Police website.

13. How do I obtain my DMV record?: You may obtain a copy of your DMV record only from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Visit the DMV website or the local DMV office located at 600 Cleveland St., Danville, VA 24541.

14. How can I find out information on Urban Archery Season?: Urban Archery Season September 6 through October 3 and January 4 through March 29, within the incorporated limits of the city of Danville. Danville Guidelines: •Any person discharging a bow must carry written permission from the property owner(s). •No person shall discharge a bow from, over, or across any street, sidewalk, alley, roadway, or public land or public place or toward any building or dwelling in such a manner that an arrow may strike it. •No person shall discharge a bow unless from an elevated position of at least ten (10) feet above the ground. •In addition to the urban archery season, archery deer hunting is also allowed during the early archery season and the general firearms deer season (i.e., from the first Saturday in October through the first Saturday in January).
