What is a City right-of-way and how far does it extend onto my property?
The City right-of-way is a strip of property along the roadway on either side of the road (the area between the road and private property) that is maintained by the City. The right-of-way does not extend into private property. It begins where your private property ends and goes all of the way across the road to where your neighbor's property begins. There is no standard right-of-way distance for every road. Generally, the right-of-way ranges from 25 - 150 feet from the road's center line. Due to this wide range, it is important to find out the exact right-of-way distance before installing a sign or objects near a road.
